Dynamic synthesis of passenger car pass-by sounds

A synthesizer is developed that generates a realistic sound image of a passing car in acoustic virtual reality. For this purpose, sound measurements are performed on car pass-bys and analyzed to identify the different partial sound sources - such as engine, exhaust and tire noise - and to determine their spectro-temporal characteristics. The sound synthesizer implements modules for auralization of frequency- and direction-dependent directivities, airborne sound attenuation, and the Doppler effect.
