Presently, compact spherical arrays of microphones and loudspeakers are used to measure directional room impulse responses for a complete spatiotemporal sound field analysis. This work deals with the analysis of point-to-point room impulse response measurements between compact spherical arrays. While higher-order arrays achieve a higher angular resolution compared to first-order arrays, they involve a band limitation toward low frequencies. This is necessary in order to avoid noise amplification due to high gains in their equalization, which trades off with time resolution. In contrast, lower-order arrays exhibit wide lobes while having an appropriate time resolution. A comparison is made between first-order and higher-order arrays with respect to their directional qualities toward sound field analysis. In directional room impulse responses, the early part consists approximately of distinct impulses due to the direct sound and a few specular reflections while the late part is diffuse with direction contributions from all around. Hence, a room impulse response can be considered as sparse in the early part. In order to determine the main directions for both, the sender and receiver side, principal component analysis is used in combination with sparse recovery.
