Medical Acoustics

These lectures should be of interest for students from different faculties with interest in the basics and application of acoustics methods to diagnosis and therapy.

Topics:

Winter term:

"Medical Acoustics: Technologies for Hearing Systems and Ultrasound" (English)

This lecture provides an overview on various acoustical methods of medical diagnosis and therapy. The students get an insight into the fundamentals of the physiology of hearing and binaural technology, enabling them to analyze and evaluate the underlying complex processes of binaural hearing. After completing this lecture, students are further capable of understanding and applying various biomedical applications in the field of acoustics, such as hearing aid technology, ultrasound diagnosis and treatment.

  • Fundamentals of Acoustics
  • Basic acoustic measurement technology
  • Resonators, modes and acoustic transmission lines
  • Loudspeaker and microphone arrays
  • Binaural Technology and Psychoaoustics
  • ENT: Physiology of Hearing
  • ENT: Hearing Aids and Cochlea Implants
  • Noise: Sources and Effects
  • Ultrasound

Summer term:

"Medical Acoustics: Audiology and Voice" (English)

This lecture provides an overview on various acoustical methods of medical diagnosis and therapy. Upon completing this lecture, students understand the functionality of the auditory system and the human voice generation process, and are able to evaluate and analyze different voice and speech disorders. They are further able to apply this knowledge in the context of diagnostic and therapeutic systems, in order to analyze and further develop existent methods in the field of audiology and speech acoustics.
