3D Modelling Techniques

We use Image-based photogrammetry for 3D modelling of outdoor and indoor architectural scenarios. With this technique we develop our research in automated 3D modelling with applications in acoustic and visual simulations.

From point clouds generated by photographic data, to texturized meshes useful for immersive applications. The technique is used for both outdoor and indoor scenarios.

  • Point cloud generation and management provides powerful data for 3D capturing.
  • The final model relies on triangulation and texturization of meshes.
 
 

We also use object-based 3D modelling of architecture. This provides a modular and parametric model in order to control different variables in the research scenarios.

  • Special attention is payed to the model scale and level of detail.
  • Computer efficiency is one of the main benefits of this technique.
  • The modular nature of these models provide variability in the material properties such as absorbent coefficients or lighting reflections.
 
 

The modelling process depends on the final application on research. For this, we use different CAD softwares and different workflows which focus in the final output.

  • Every scenario implies a different size of environment.
  • Capturing the scene requires a detailed plan and calibration of the input data.
  • Building point clouds and the final 3D objects meshes needs careful attention to the final running platform.
 
 

Rendering Architectural Environments

We finally Real-Time render the environments using the Unreal Engine platform for visualization and Virtual Acoustics for auralisation.

In the case of photogrammetric captured environments, light transfers are extracted directly from the visual data, since they contain real illumination. The acoustic cues can be recorded or simulated from an acoustic model.

  • Colors and shadows are printed in the textures.
  • This technique is specially suitable for complex geometries, normally present in historic and monumental architecture.
  • Acoustic models can be derived from the geometries and textures.

For object based models, lighting is calculated and rendered on the platform, in order to achieve the immersive experience.

  • Both backed light or real time renderings can be rendered with object-based models
  • Acoustic models are extracted and simplified from the visual models taking care of reflection and diffraction.
  • Lighting and texturing are rendered independently.
 
 

Hand-held representation techniques

Architectural design process is suggestive. Regarding this fact, the first stages of the process can be considered as a creative process. The architect makes intensive use of hand-held representation techniques in that phase.

The knowledge on architectural drafts, sketches, paper models, visual perspectives, drawings in techniques such as ink, charcoal, pencil, watercolor, collages or photographs is necessary when representing architecture for different purposes. Teaching aspects of human perception is improved by making use of those techniques.

Well-known concepts here are plane view, field of view, visual depth, level of detail, edge sharpness, target and background, shadows or 3D spatial representation. They are the basics of new visual simulation techniques, and provide a clear link to creative and personal nature of architectural design
