Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedical EngineeringCopyright: Lehrstuhl für Medizinische Informationstechnik (MedIT)
In 2002, the Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedical Engineering has been expanded to a faculty-spanning consortium which is sustained by the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Technology and Medical Faculty.
Within the Helmholtz-Institute, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is represented by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. med Steffen Leonhardt, presently managing director, and by former managing director Prof. em. Dr. rer. nat. Dipl.-Ing. Günther Rau who had directed the original Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedical Engineering founded in the 70's.
At present, the Helmholtz-Institute connects the research activities of 7 different chairs representing expertise in the engineering, in the medical and the biological field. Research activities include wearable medical devices, measurement technology, automatic control in medicine, robotic surgery, smart instruments, implants and artificial organs as well as tissue engineering, molecular imaging, stem cells, biomaterials and biological surfaces.
